Jets QB Justin Fields returns to practice but remains in concussion protocol

NEW YORK — Justin Fields is progressing towards a return on Monday night.
The fifth-year quarterback practiced on Thursday, but remains in concussion protocol, according to Jets coach Aaron Glenn.
“He still has to go through the whole protocol before he’s totally cleared,” Glenn said. “But I like where he’s at.”
Glenn also stated that Fields would be the Jets’ starter against the Dolphins if he is cleared to play. Fields has to pass all five steps of the concussion protocol, including participating in a non-contact practice and being examined by both a team physician and an independent neurologist.
Fields went through non-contact drills and football activities and was listed as a full participant in Thursday’s practice.
Fields suffered a concussion during the fourth quarter of the Jets’ Week 2 loss to the Bills when the back of his head hit the turf after he was taken down by Bills pass rusher Joey Bosa. He finished the game 3 for 11 for 27 yards and lost a fumble before exiting the game.
Glenn then quickly ruled out Fields and named backup Tyrod Taylor the starter against the Buccaneers before their first practice of last week. Taylor struggled during the first three quarters against the Bucs, but was one of the catalysts for their 17-point comeback in the fourth quarter that resulted in Gang Green taking a 27-26 lead with 1:49 remaining. However, Chase McLaughlin kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give Tampa a 29-27 victory.
In the losing effort, Taylor completed 26 of 36 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns. He also had two turnovers, including a lost fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Whoever the Jets start at QB against the Dolphins on Monday will need to improve an offense that has struggled the last two weeks, as Gang Green averaged just 210.5 yards per game. Through three weeks, the Jets rank 26th in yards (271.7) per game and 16th in scoring offense (23).
The Jets want to be a run-heavy team offensively. However, they are averaging 111 yards on the ground the last two weeks after finishing with 182 during the 34-32 Week 1 loss to the Steelers.
Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency, was superb in Week 1 against Pittsburgh. He completed 16 of 22 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. Fields also registered 48 rushing yards and two rushing TDs against the Steelers.
“When you go to our first week, the running game was clicking,” Glenn said. “When you go to our second week, we got all out of sorts to where we had to end up throwing the ball quite a bit. This week, we played against probably one of the best run defenses in the league. I don’t want to sit here and say our run game doesn’t work at all.
“It’s just the fact of what happened within those games that made us have to do something different. Every team has a hard time running against Tampa. But we’re not getting away from who we think we are as far as a team.”
