Kane ties Modano's points record but Red Wings fall to Kings, 3-1

DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings returned home from a successful road trip to begin a homestand with a lackluster loss.
Los Angeles came into Little Caesars Arena Tuesday and throttled the Wings, 3-1, sending the Wings (32-17-5, 69 points) to only their second regulation time loss in the last 11 games (8-2-1).
The only good news was on the Patrick Kane front.
The Wings cut the lead to 2-1 on Alex DeBrincat's 28th goal at 17 minutes, 45 seconds of the third period. Kane earned an assist on the play, his 1,374th point, tying Westland's Mike Modano for most points by an American-born player.
Kane almost tied the game — and set the new record — on a set up from Moritz Seider to Kane near the goal post. But goaltender Anton Forsberg made the save, and moments later, Corey Perry's empty-net goal at 18:47, gave the Kings a 3-1 lead.
Samuel Helenius and Andrei Kuzmenko (power play) also scored, and Forsberg stopped 21 shots for the Kings (22-16-13, 57 points).
Kuzmenko gave the Kings a 2-0 lead, on the power play, in the third period. Adrian Kempe had the puck near the goal line and fed Kuzmenko near the hashmark, Kuzmenko one-timing a shot past goaltender John Gibson for his 11th goal, at 6:46.
Gibson (23 saves) saw his eight-game win streak come to an end.
Helenius broke open a goal-less game in the second period with his second goal.
Jeff Malott controlled a puck in the corner and fed Helenius near the hashmarks. Helenius snapped a shot that beat Gibson cleanly at the 10-minute mark, giving the Kings a 1-0 lead.
The Wings were 0 for 3 on the power play.
The Wings continue this three-game homestand Thursday hosting Washington.
