Desmond Bane 3-point winner lifts Magic past Portland

ORLANDO, Fla. — After the Orlando Magic fell to the Boston Celtics Sunday night, Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley continued to mention the amount of turnovers his team committed (17) and how many points Boston scored off them (29) regardless of the question he was asked postgame.
Back at Kia Center less than 24 hours later Monday, the Magic knew they’d have to put an extra emphasis on taking care of the ball when hosting the Portland Trail Blazers, who entered the contest forcing the most turnovers in the league (20.1) and scoring the most points off them (24.7) per night, according to NBA.com.
Although Orlando committed 13 turnovers for 12 Portland points, the team was able to overcome their mistakes late in a thrilling 115-112 victory thanks to a combined 88 points from Paolo Banchero (28), Desmond Bane (22), Franz Wagner (19) and Wendell Carter Jr. (19).
After Banchero missed a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left, Jerami Grant put Portland ahead 112-110 with 10.6 seconds left. Banchero tied the game with a tough finish through contract but missed a third free throw that would have given Orlando a one-point lead.
Banchero recorded a steal and quickly called timeout to set up one last chance for Orlando. That’s when Bane drilled a 3-pointer in the closing moments to lift the Magic past from the Trail Blazers (5-5).
The Magic (5-6) entered 1-5 against teams with a .500-or-better record but found a way to win despite a game-high 31 points from Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe.
Orlando hits the road Wednesday for their first appearance on ESPN this season against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Starting 5
Without Jalen Suggs (left knee injury management) on the second night of a back-to-back, Anthony Black earned the start alongside regulars Bane, Wagner, Banchero and Carter against Portland.
Black hit Orlando’s first triple after the team started 0 for 6 from distance. The third-year guard, however, ended with just eight points when he earned five fouls.
An 11-point second quarter gave Banchero 16 at the half. The Magic All-Star forward was efficient and assertive with the ball getting to his spots on the floor while adding nine rebounds.
After taking just one 3-pointer vs. Boston, it wasn’t by coincidence Bane took Orlando’s first shot of the night that was a triple. Still searching for shot, however, Bane missed his first four attempts from distance but it was his last shot that counted the most.
Wagner didn’t allow an early shot to the nose slow him down from attacking downhill when he posted 10 first-half points with six free throws. He added nine rebounds and six assists.
Carter’s night was highlighted by a one-handed slam down the baseline early in the second frame when he notched 11 points in his first 8 minutes on the court.
Second unit
With Black elevated to the starting lineup, that opened an opportunity for fellow 2023 lottery pick Jett Howard to see the court after not playing in either game vs. Boston.
Howard, however, missed his first three shots from the field, and was held scoreless in 8 first-half minutes. He got on the board late in the third frame with a corner triple.
While Howard hit once from 3, the same couldn’t be said for Tristan da Silva. After three straight games in double digits, the second-year forward missed his first five shots from distance and ended with just two points in 17 minutes.
Goga Bitadze made his way to the charity stripe when he shot 5-for-5 to post seven points by half.
Jonathan Isaac hustled throughout the night for rebounds (6) and hit a corner 3 early in the second quarter. He later was active on defense with a steal and transition layup.
Veteran guard Tyus Jones started the second quarter but only played 5-and-a-half scoreless minutes.
Free points
The Magic entered Monday shooting 78.1% from the free throw line (which ranked 18th in the NBA), and Portland sent Orlando to the line throughout the night.
That cost the Trail Blazers when the Magic made 18 of their first 19 attempts at the line. Orlando entered taking per average a league-high 32.4 attempts and on Monday shot 29 for 34.
But the Magic fouled plenty, too, when Portland converted 19 of their 26 trips at the line.
