Kroger pulls Red Bull from shelves nationwide
Published in Business News
Kroger has stopped selling Red Bull at all its stores and fuel centers nationwide, the company confirmed to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
The last of the energy drink was sold in August and its coolers and displays were removed from stores as of Aug. 31, according to the Enquirer, citing company officials.
Kroger and Red Bull did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday from The Detroit News.
The grocer continues to sell competitor energy drinks, including Monster, Alani Nu, Bloom, Rockstar and NOS, the Enquirer reported. Kroger's new CEO, Greg Foran, vowed to push back against supplier price increases as inflation continues to squeeze shoppers.
On a Sept. 11 earnings call, Foran said the company is seeking to capture market share by lowering prices, improving store services and investing in the company’s workforce. Kroger is also looking to boost online sales.
The Enquirer reported that the grocer plans to expand its value private brand, Smart Way, from about 130 items to 1,000. Moreover, where Kroger can't get acceptable prices from vendors, the company will lean more on its private-label brands, which generated $39 billion in sales last year, more than a quarter of Kroger's $148 billion in total revenue, according to the Enquirer.
Kroger, a Fortune 500 company based in Cincinnati, operates more than 2,700 stores nationwide under various names, including 83 supermarkets in Michigan.
