Start your engines: General Motors is zooming into downtown Seattle to open its new office.

The Detroit-based automotive manufacturing company announced the lease for its Denny Triangle location in a news release Wednesday.

The 43,000-square-foot office is set to open early next year. It will be at the West8 building at 2001 Eighth Ave. near the Amazon Spheres.

With Seattle’s deep technology talent pool, the new office will help GM expand its existing concentration of technical employees and hire additional talent," spokesperson Cailin Brashear said in a statement.

The office will be home to teams working on digital products, autonomous vehicles, IT, human resources and marketing, among others. The company will focus on recruiting artificial intelligence and machine learning engineers to "strengthen the technical foundation of GM’s on- and off-vehicle software and services."

Brashear didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday on how many employees are expected to report to the Seattle location.

Big names like artificial intelligence company Anthropic have also turned to downtown Seattle this year for expansion.

Seattle's office vacancy rate for multitenant buildings bigger than 10,000 square feet stands at about 28%, per commercial real estate firm Kidder Mathews.

The central business district tracks even higher at 35%, followed by Belltown and Denny at 32%. Notably, Northgate and North Seattle only see an 8.5% total vacancy rate, with South Seattle at 9%.

"The Puget Sound office market is showing early signs of stabilization after several years of disruption, the firm wrote in its latest market report for the second quarter of 2026.

GM employs more than 90,000 workers, per its website. Other hubs for GM include Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The company produces renowned auto brands Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. It's also a leader in self-driving technology, offering Super Cruise for hands-free driving under certain conditions.

GM's competitors include Volkswagen, the Ford Motor Company, Tesla, Rivian Automotive and Stellantis N.V.

West8 features a fitness center, an outdoor terrace, cafe Corner 8 and restaurant Urban Sushi Kitchen.
