Austin Wells' big hits, Max Fried's strong start propel Yankees to 10-2 rout of Royals

NEW YORK — Austin Wells provided plenty of thump on Tuesday night in Kansas City.
The Yankees’ backstop drove in five runs thanks to a three-run homer and a two-RBI double in their series-opening 10-2 victory against the Royals. Wells’ 11th homer of the season came in the fourth inning as his big night brought his season numbers up to .227/.294/.476.
Wells wasn’t the only performer of the night as manager Aaron Boone’s lineup featured multiple contributors. Aaron Judge demolished his 24th homer of the season, 469 feet down the left-field line and nearly out of Kauffman Stadium in the top of the first. The Captain’s two-run shot jump-started the Yanks to a 2-0 lead and he later added a bloop RBI single to cap off his 2-for-5 evening.
Jasson Dominguez posted three hits — all from the right side. The 22-year-old was among six Bombers to record multi-hit games, including Trent Grisham, Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu.
Max Fried continued his stellar season as the southpaw tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. The 31-year-old’s season ERA is now at 1.84. Yerry De Los Santos replaced Fried in the eighth and tossed a scoreless frame. The right-hander came back out in the ninth and recorded two outs, however, he loaded the bases, forcing the Yanks to call on Tim Hill for the final out and secure their 40th win of the season.
Boone will send out Clarke Schmidt on Wednesday night as the Yanks look to rack up another series victory before heading to Fenway Park on Friday night. Royals manager Matt Quatraro will call on southpaw Cole Ragans who is having a surprisingly down season as the 27-year-old owns a 5.13 ERA in 2025.
