Is it fail to label tragedies "acts of God"?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I reach for my iPhone first thing in the morning and check the headlines to see what catastrophe happened overnight. Lately, it isn’t just one catastrophe, but many. When I read the articles, it’s stunning to see how many tragedies are blamed on “acts of God.” Is this really fair? – C.E.

A: An “act of God” is defined as “a natural hazard outside human control for which no person can be held responsible.” But the key phrase is “outside of human control.” Man has never been able to control the weather, though they may try. Tsunamis, hurricanes and other such storms swoop into our lives and leave many hopeless.

Mankind takes great pride in being in control. Yet we see headlines about a gunman shooting at churchgoers, children committing violence in the school yard, and predators that prey on the young and innocent.

But the Strong Man Jesus Christ did what no man has ever done or will ever do. He spoke, “Peace, be still,” and the raging sea quieted and brought relief to a boatload of frightened disciples who gave glory to the Master of the Sea, saying, “Even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Mark 4:39–41, NKJV).

Many are on troubled and treacherous seas. Many are being battered around on little boats that are about to sink. Invite the Master of the Sea into your life. With the power of His gentle voice, He can calm the storms and bring quiet peace to the soul.

God takes the weak and makes them strong. He takes the vile and makes them clean. He takes the worthless and makes them worthwhile. He takes the sinful and makes them sinless. Only a gracious and loving God can do this.
