James Van Der Beek renewed his wedding vows with his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, in an intimate and “moving” ceremony just days before the actor’s death last week.
The “Dawson’s Creek” star died Feb. 11, just over a year after revealing he had Stage 3 colorectal cancer.
A few days before the actor died at the age of 48, the couple enlisted the help of their friends and family to renew their love in a “simple, beautiful and moving” ceremony, his wife of 15 years told People in a story published Tuesday.
“We decided two days beforehand, and our friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles, and we renewed our vows from bed,” Kimberly said, noting that family members and some close friends attended in person, while other loved ones participated via Zoom.
One of the friends in attendance — the Brazilian-born multi-instrumentalist Poranguí — played the “most beautiful music” and concluded the ceremony with the Judy Garland classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” she told the publication.
James, who rose to international fame as Dawson Leery in the pre-streaming teen drama beloved late Gen Xers and millennials, “passed peacefully” on the morning of Feb. 11, his wife shared on his official Instagram page.
“He met his final days with courage, faith and grace,” said Kimberly, who shares six children with the late actor.
James and Kimberly married on Aug. 1, 2010, in Tel Aviv, Israel.
