New on DVD: Build your own adventure with 'A Minecraft Movie'
Published in Entertainment News
A video game adaptation that crafted success at the box office tops the DVD releases for the week of June 24.
"A Minecraft Movie": Jack Black and Jason Mamoa star in this action comedy inspired by the popular Minecraft gaming franchise, helmed by "Napoleon Dynamite" director Jared Hess.
"To its credit, 'A Minecraft Movie' — notably it's not 'The Minecraft Movie,' although that could just be semantics — never takes itself or its subject matter seriously. It's paper thin and could all blow away with a gust of air, and Hess treats it as such," writes film critic Adam Graham of The Detroit News in his review. "But it's never snarky or cynical. It's a wholesome comedy for kids and families with messages about teamwork and friendship, it carries a PG rating, and it's not trying to slip anything past anyone. There is plenty of Minecraft to wow young fans of the game, and there's enough bits of weirdo humor to make the movie feel like it was made by individuals and not a committee of consultants or shareholders."
