Sound Advice: Golf rangefinder a hole-in-one gift idea and TV shopping tips

Quality $80 golf rangefinder: I wish I would have come across this sooner for Father's Day, but it is Father's Day gift giving that caused me to come across this nice golf rangefinder, which was recently introduced and getting good reviews. This is also a product category that I have been asked to cover, so a lot of readers should enjoy this as well.
The Takenjoy Golf Rangefinder charges via USB and comes in a semi-hard case with a belt loop. It's very simple to sum up in that it is fast, accurate and easy to use. I took it to the driving range and the distance measurements were quickly and clearly shown in the finder, and it displays slope compensation as well. As a longtime photography enthusiast who wrote a book about digital photography, I appreciate good optics and am happy to report it makes a fine spotting scope as well. The view through it is sharp and clear, and that it is also a measuring device makes it that much better.
The Takenjoy Rangefinder lists for $159.99 on Amazon, and typically sells for $109.99. Current coupon code GOLF3030 reduces the price approximately $30 to $80.29. My dad ended up getting one for Father's Day and if his excited reaction is any indication, it's a winner of a gift!
Q. I need to replace our 2012 Panasonic Viera 60-inch TV with something at least 65 inches in size, perhaps a bit larger. I do not need a top-of-the-line TV but would like something good. Can you recommend a couple of options? I was at Best Buy and they recommended the 65-inch Samsung S90D OLED TV. While they have the new model in stock, they still have a few of last year’s model for $1,000 less, selling for $1,500. Does that seem like a good deal, would you go for last year's model for the savings? I will also need a new receiver to power my Definitive Technology ProCinema speakers and they recommended the Denon AVR-S770H for $649. Is that a good way to go?

A. It is easy for me to tell you to buy last year's model, because that is what I myself always do. It makes so much sense financially, especially when buying higher-end TVs. Unless something breaks and I am forced to make a purchase, or I am buying a TV as a gift, I always wait for these sales because the savings are so significant and the differences from one model year to the next are usually pretty small. In April 2023 I purchased a beautiful 85-inch Samsung Neo QLED QN90D for my downstairs home theater, paying $2,599, reduced from $4,999. (I can guarantee you the model that replaced the QN90D was not $2,400 better!) Looking back even further, my 60-inch Panasonic VT60 plasma bedroom TV was also purchased shortly after they were discontinued, also at a great discount. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was almost 50%.
The S90D OLED will certainly suit you well, and if you followed last week's column you saw that Panasonic is having a phenomenal sale on their Mini LED and OLED TVs. The Denon is an excellent receiver for $649, but if you can go up to the $1,000 price range the Onkyo RZ30 belongs on your shopping list. It's the class act in its category right now, and I will have more about it in an upcoming column. Onkyo A/V receivers were my go-to for many years, and it is nice to see them returning to prominence in the audio world. onkyousa.com
