Oysters connected to a salmonella outbreak have been recalled from Publix stores, the supermarket chain announced.

The shellstock oysters, sold at Publix under the brand James River Oysters, were recalled by Virginia’s Little Wicomico Oyster Company. The Virginia Department of Health says this covers oysters harvested from Sept. 18 through Oct. 8.

Other stores might be affected by this recall, but as of Thursday morning, Publix was the only chain among the nation’s top 10 grocers to declare its association. When asked by a Miami Herald reporter where the oysters had been distributed, the person answering the phone at Little Wicomico on Thursday morning said they only needed to answer questions from customers and hung up the phone.

Virginia’s Department of Health said epidemiological evidence — the information used to track disease spread — connected people infected in a Pennsylvania salmonella outbreak “and consumption of oysters harvested in the Little Wicomico River and Little Wicomico River Lower, VA by Little Wicomico River Oyster Co.”

Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne illnesses, infecting approximately 1.35 million people in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A hit of salmonella usually brings four to seven days of fever, stomachaches and diarrhea.

Anyone with the recalled oysters should return them for a refund or at least throw them deep enough into the garbage to prevent curious pets from reaching them.

Questions about this recall should be directed to Little Wicomico Oyster Company at (804) 436-5671 or info@lwoysters.com.
