3 Towson University students among 17 facing firearms charges after shooting

BALTIMORE — Three of the 17 people facing firearms charges following a weekend shooting near Towson University are enrolled there as students, the university said Wednesday.

A Towson University spokesperson confirmed that Joseph Duwana, 21, Kevin Kotchi, 21 and Kenneth Nambou, 23, are listed as students for the fall semester.

All three men are charged with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a rapid-fire trigger activator, an accessory that increases the rate of fire of a semi-automatic gun. A Towson District Court judge on Tuesday ordered all three men to remain held without bond.

The weapons charges against the three Towson University students stem from a shooting Sunday evening near the Cardiff Hall Apartments off York Road that left an 18-year-old man critically injured.

Police were called to the complex shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday following multiple reports of gunfire.

Although Towson University students live in Cardiff Hall Apartments, the complex is not on campus and is not affiliated with the university. The Baltimore County Police Department, however, “maintains ongoing communication and partnerships with Towson University, area businesses and residential communities regarding public safety,” spokesperson Trae Corbin said in an email.

Charging documents say that as officers headed to the apartments, a witness called 911 to report a person with a gunshot wound at the intersection of Campus View Drive and Osler Drive. The man, who has not been identified and is not affiliated with the university, was shot in the chest, according to the documents.

Officers arriving at the apartment complex off York Road found spent cartridge casings in the area, charging documents say. One witness who spoke with police said they saw several men run into a specific unit in one of the apartment buildings, while another said they believed a rifle was used to shoot the man.

Police ordered residents of that unit to leave, detaining several people, according to charging documents. Tactical officers who conducted a limited protective sweep of the apartment found another person hiding there, as well as a rifle.

Charging documents say officers found five weapons, including an H&K rifle that was reported stolen from Leesburg, Virginia, and four Glock handguns, two of which were equipped with rapid-fire trigger activators.
