MIAMI — A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on Saturday morning while assisting the Florida Highway Patrol with a traffic crash.

The deputy was stopped on the Turnpike near Northwest 74th Street when the crash happened around 7 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the deputy to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle that hit the deputy remained on the scene.

The deputy is a 20-year-veteran in law enforcement, having previously worked in corrections, and has been with the sheriff’s office for five years. Authorities have yet to publicly identify him, as some of his family members have yet to be notified.

The deputy “received serious injuries,” Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia said outside HCA Kendall Hospital where the deputy was airlifted.

The deputy underwent surgery and remains under care. Garcia added that he suffered multiple injuries all over his body.

“Although we remain cautiously hopeful, this is very serious and we ask everyone for prayers,” Garcia said.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz posted on X that the deputy is in stable condition. Garcia did not say what may have caused the collision but stressed the importance of drivers slowing down or moving over when approaching a traffic crash. No further details of the crash were given.

Garcia cited the active investigation being conducted by MDSO’s traffic homicide team. The deputy was on duty when he responded to the original crash that occurred somewhere northbound on the Turnpike somewhere between Northwest 41st and 58th streets.

The original call involved what police said was a possible “entrapment,” which refers to a person being trapped in a vehicle, but did not say if the deputy or someone else was affected. Police did not release details on the condition of either the driver in the original incident or the driver who hit the deputy.

The crash was causing major traffic delays as all northbound lanes on the Turnpike were closed from Northwest 41st Street to 74th Street, according to the sheriff’s office. By 3:30 p.m., the lanes were reopened.

Drivers are still urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
