A 15-year-old high school student is recovering after being attacked by a sword-swinging assailant dressed in a trench coat, a hat and a mask with a long beak.

Chinonso Onuke nearly lost seven fingers in the assault that happened at Brandon’s Neelin High School in Manitoba last week, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

The victim said he was caught off guard by the bizarre costume, then found himself fighting for his life as the attacker plunged the blade into Onuke’s stomach.

“I grab [the sword] with both hands … and he tries to pull it away,” Onuke told the CBC on Tuesday.

Onuke said he held on to the sword for a moment, then pushed his assailant away and ran down the hall toward the school’s office.

Onuke was rushed to a Winnipeg hospital with wounds to his abdomen, chest, thigh and hands. He survived 10 hours of emergency surgery in which his blood pressure reportedly plunged to dangerously low levels. He’s now recovering at home.

Police used a stun gun to detain the 16-year-old suspect, whose motive is unclear. Onuke’s family said they believe the attack was racially driven.

While a motive remains under investigation, police said they’re certain “the harms that were intended were beyond the individual victim involved” and further bloodshed would’ve occurred had the attacker not been stopped.

Onuke plans to spend the summer recuperating and said he has no fear of returning to school in the fall.

“Why would I be terrified of going back to a place I like?” he asked. “There’s like a 0.01% chance of this happening again.”
